Navigating fuel safety compliance

September 5, 2024

Safety in fuel supply isn’t just a protocol – it’s a commitment to excellence and reliability in every operation and ensures clients, staff and the community are safeguarded from any accidents or issues should they arise. Effective compliance hinges on rigorous training, precise incident management, and adherence to evolving national regulations. By embedding safety into every aspect of operations, our company can mitigate risks, provide high-quality service and uphold our reputational integrity. This news piece will delve into the comprehensive safety protocols and measures that Refuelling Solutions employs throughout operations, and how they exemplify industry best practices.

Safe work methods across all operations

At Refuelling Solutions, we enforce a variety of strict safe work methods to ensure the safety of all operations tailored to the specific needs of fuel delivery and handling. From manual handling techniques designed to protect our operators from injury to precise procedures for loading and unloading fuel, each method is rigorously applied and monitored to minimise the risk of accidents and improve operational efficiency. Continuous training and audits reinforce these practices as we prioritise safety and keep it at the forefront of every delivery we perform.

Rigorous tanker standards and compliance

Our tankers are subject to stringent compliance checks and standards, ensuring they meet and exceed industry safety requirements. We abide by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) legislation and chain of responsibility legislation to follow strict safety protocols across our operations. Each truck and tanker in our fleet, whether carrying diesel or petrol, is built and maintained to comply with Australian Standard 2809 Road tank vehicles for dangerous goods. Additionally, the bi-annual inspections for these trucks and the operators, alongside the necessity for a Safe Load Pass (SLP), guarantee that each vehicle is not only fit for the road but also equipped for safe fuel transport across every fuel terminal in Australia.

Ensuring rapid response with TERP

In the case of a hiccup out on delivery, the Transport Emergency Response Plan (TERP) equips our team with the tools and knowledge to manage incidents swiftly and effectively. This detailed manual can be found in each of our tankers and trucks and provides step-by-step guidance on managing spills and operational hazards while out on fuel delivery. We perform regular drills and training sessions to improve the operator’s ability to implement TERP effectively, ensuring that every emergency is handled with precision and speed.

Handling spills with expertise

In the rare event that a fuel spill does occur, our trained operators are equipped to manage up to 40 litres using our onboard spill kits, which can also be found in each truck and tanker within our fleet. Operators follow a specific cleanup procedure to ensure rapid containment and minimise environmental impact. If spills exceed 40 litres, we enlist the help of the ISS First Response team to clean large spills, handle vehicle accidents, complete the correct reporting and organise the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) should they need to get involved. This level of expertise underscores the importance of spill risk management and our commitment to environmental protection and operational safety.

Building and maintaining a modern fleet

We have a fleet of 250 - 300 tankers and are constantly building new ones and taking old ones off the road to ensure our equipment meets the latest safety and efficiency standards. We typically have at least three old trucks that are taken off the roads to remove the old chassis and get them retrofitted and reequipped with newer pumping equipment and chassis. This renewal process occurs every five years, guaranteeing that each truck in our fleet remains at the peak of operational excellence and safety compliance. Our proactive fleet management strategy not only improves our service reliability but also aligns with our commitment to safety and quality.

Proactive safety management with Safety Incident Compliance and Consultation Meetings

We perform regular Safety Incident Compliance and Consultation Meetings (SICCM) play a crucial role in our safety management system. These meetings provide a forum for discussing recent incidents, reviewing safety practices, and implementing necessary changes and campaigns to mitigate future risks. By proactively managing safety through these regular interactions, we ensure continuous improvement and adherence to best practices.

How Refuelling Solutions continues to commit to safety improvements

Our relentless pursuit of safety excellence is driven by a commitment to continuous improvement and adaptation. As regulations evolve and new safety technologies emerge, we remain dedicated to integrating these advancements into our operations and providing clients with the assurance that their fuel needs are handled by the best in the business.
